autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Objective of AS 4<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To prescribe the treatment of significant events that occur between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Balance Sheet Date, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The date on which financial statements are approved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is the Balance Sheet Date?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the last day of the accounting period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For accounts prepared for the year ending 31 March 2025,<br>Balance Sheet Date = 31 March 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meaning of Events After the Balance Sheet Date<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>These are events (favourable or unfavourable) that occur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After the balance sheet date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But before approval of financial statements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classification of Events under AS 4<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AS 4 classifies events into two categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adjusting Events<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Events that provide additional evidence of conditions that existed on the balance sheet date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These events:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Require adjustment in the financial statements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of Adjusting Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bad debts confirmed after balance sheet date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Settlement of a court case confirming an existing liability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fall in inventory value due to conditions existing at year-end<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discovery of errors or frauds relating to the period<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A debtor of \u20b92,00,000 becomes insolvent in April.<br>If insolvency relates to poor financial condition existing on 31 March \u2192<br><strong>Provision for bad debts must be made.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-Adjusting Events<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Events that indicate conditions that arose after the balance sheet date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These events:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not require adjustment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But material events must be disclosed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of Non-Adjusting Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fire destroying factory after balance sheet date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Issue of shares or debentures after year-end<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major acquisition or merger after balance sheet date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Natural calamity (earthquake, flood, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fire breaks out on 10 April destroying inventory.<br>&#8211;
